~ Idaho Falls residents are being given the opportunity to provide their input on the upcoming Elm Street reconstruction project. The City of Idaho Falls Public Works Department announced that they will be starting design work on the project, which aims to improve safety and accessibility along Elm Street.
The proposed improvements include upgrades to the street and sidewalks, enhancements to traffic safety, and potential changes to the speed limit, including a school zone near Alturas Academy. To gather feedback from the community, an online open house has been set up where residents can learn more about the project and share their thoughts.
According to Chris Fredericksen, Public Works Director, Elm Street is a crucial part of the community as it connects downtown with South Boulevard. He emphasized that this project will not only improve safety and accessibility for drivers but also for pedestrians, cyclists, and students. Fredericksen encourages everyone to review the plans and provide their input by February 15th.

The reconstruction of Elm Street will involve various improvements aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility for all users. These include reconstructing pedestrian ramps to meet ADA standards, full-depth reconstruction of the roadway for better durability, curb extensions at key intersections for improved pedestrian safety, upgraded storm drain facilities, relocation of a flashing beacon for safer crossings, updated signage and pavement markings for better traffic clarity.
A recent speed study near Alturas Academy has also informed proposed speed updates for this project. While the current posted speed limit is 25 mph, most drivers tend to travel closer to 30 mph. As a result, it is being proposed that the posted speed limit be updated to 30 mph with a dedicated 20 mph school zone during arrival and dismissal times in order to ensure the safety of students.
Design work is currently underway and is expected to be finalized in spring 2026 after receiving public input. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2027 in order to minimize disruptions to Alturas Academy's school schedule. The city is seeking feedback from residents, business owners, and other stakeholders on how Elm Street is currently being used and how the proposed improvements can better support safety and accessibility. This project is part of the city's ongoing efforts to invest in critical infrastructure and improve connectivity by creating safer and more accessible streets for all users.
