Before arriving in Ann Arbor, McKenney established himself as one of Michigan's top high school basketball players at Orchard Lake St. Mary's. In 2025, he was named the recipient of the prestigious Hal Schram Mr. Basketball Award and was recognized as a consensus five-star recruit and McDonald's All-American. During his senior season, he averaged 22.9 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists while helping lead St. Mary's to a Division 1 State Championship.

McKenney continued that success during his freshman season at Michigan, becoming an important contributor to the Wolverines' historic 2026 national championship run. He played in all 40 games as Michigan finished 37–3, won the outright Big Ten regular-season title, and captured the program's second national championship. McKenney averaged 9.9 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from three-point range. He also earned All-Big Ten Freshman Team honors.
