Energy Emergency Alert issued for Columbia and area
Rezul News/10740585
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) has declared an Energy Emergency Alert (EEA) Level 2 for the central and north regions, including the Columbia area. This alert will be in effect from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. CST today, July 15, 2026. The current situation is due to high system loads and tight reserves.
According to MISO, all generation sources for the City of Columbia are currently operational and the electric grid remains stable. However, neighboring states within MISO are experiencing strain on their grids. In order to help alleviate this strain, residents are urged to reduce unnecessary electricity usage while still prioritizing staying cool.
To assist in this effort, MISO suggests setting thermostats as high as possible while maintaining a comfortable temperature and using fans to circulate air. Keeping shades down over south- and west-facing windows that receive direct sunlight can also help keep homes cooler. Additionally, turning off unneeded lights and unplugging appliances and electronics when not in use can reduce heat generation.

For businesses, MISO recommends sending nonessential personnel home, reducing nonessential lighting, and minimizing large electric loads. These small actions can make a significant impact on stabilizing the grid during this high-demand period.
The City of Columbia Utilities department is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to keep residents and businesses informed. They stress the importance of reducing electricity usage during this time to lessen the demand on the system. Simple steps such as delaying laundry or turning off decorative lights can make a big difference.
As the EEA Level 2 alert remains in effect until 8 p.m., it is crucial for everyone in the affected regions to do their part in conserving energy. By working together, we can help keep our electric grid stable during this challenging time.
