Dog Licensing Reminder (and Boston's Most Popular Dog Names!)

Rezul News/10728889
~ Boston residents are reminded that all dogs in the city are required to have a new license each year. This process can be completed online, by mail, or in-person at upcoming licensing clinics.

According to Alexis Trzcinski, Director of Animal Care and Control, dog licenses are not only a legal requirement but also help ensure that lost pets can be quickly returned to their owners. Trzcinski urges pet owners to do their part in keeping their furry companions safe and tagged.

As part of this year's licensing reminder, the top ten most popular dog names in Boston for 2025 have been revealed. Topping the list is Charlie with 118 registered pups, followed by Luna with 137 registrations for female dogs. The 25th most popular name for dogs was Poppy with 49 registered.

In addition to popular names, data also shows Boston's favorite dog breeds. The Labrador Retriever takes the top spot with 1,961 registered, followed by the Golden Retriever (970) and Miniature Poodle (543). Other top breeds include the Chihuahua (490) and German Shepherd (480).

It is important to note that all dogs over six months old must be licensed annually. Owners must provide a copy of their dog's current rabies certificate and proof of spaying or neutering if applicable. Licensing fees are $15 for neutered or spayed pets and $30 for unaltered pets. However, fees are waived for service animals and residents aged 70 or older. Failure to license a pet may result in a $50 fine.
