Council Calls for Full Boston Public Schools Participation in Safe Routes to School Program

Rezul News/10740630
~ Boston City Councilors Pepén, FitzGerald, and Worrell have passed a resolution urging Boston Public Schools (BPS) to fully enroll all 103 eligible schools in the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School (MA SRTS) Program. This resolution was adopted by the Council during their recent meeting.

The MA SRTS Program is a federally funded initiative administered by MassDOT. It aims to provide schools with free safety education, incentive materials, programming support, and access to federal funding to promote safe walking and biking to school. The resolution states that enrollment in the program only requires a brief online registration process that includes providing district contact information. Furthermore, there is no cost involved for the school district or the City.

Currently, only 58 out of 103 eligible BPS schools are enrolled in the program. This means that almost half of the schools are missing out on valuable resources and funding opportunities. The resolution also highlights that BPS is the largest school district in Massachusetts that has not yet achieved full enrollment in MA SRTS. In contrast, neighboring communities such as Cambridge, Lowell, Lynn, Fall River, and Brockton have successfully enrolled all their eligible schools.

The Councilors recognize that increasing participation in the program aligns with their shared goals of improving school safety, reducing conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians, promoting active transportation, and fostering community engagement around safe travel to school.

In light of this resolution, Boston Public Schools is being urged to immediately complete enrollment of all eligible schools by submitting the required district partner registration through the MassDOT Safe Routes to School partner portal. The Council believes that this step will greatly benefit students and contribute towards creating safer routes for them to get to school.
