Columbia: Winners announced for 2026 Earth Day Art Contest

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia, in collaboration with Boone County and the University of Missouri, has announced the winners of the 2026 Earth Day Art Contest. The competition, which was open to students from kindergarten to 12th grade, aimed to encourage creativity while encouraging participants to reflect on the natural world around them.

This year's theme, "How the animals, plants and nature in Boone County make your life better or more fun," inspired young artists to showcase how local ecosystems enhance daily life. Submissions highlighted various aspects such as wildlife, native plants, outdoor recreation and the beauty of Boone County's natural landscapes.

The winners were selected in four age divisions: K-2nd Grade, 3rd-5th Grade, 6th-8th Grade and 9th-12th Grade. The list of winners can be found in the attached PDF.

Michele Woolbright, Boone County Stormwater Educator expressed her admiration for the submissions saying, "The creativity and thoughtfulness shown in these submissions were inspiring. Each piece reflected a strong connection to nature and demonstrated how environmental appreciation begins at a young age."

The Earth Day Art Contest is part of ongoing efforts by the City of Columbia, Boone County and the University of Missouri to promote environmental awareness and education through creative expression. This includes initiatives such as the City's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) program. All participants were recognized for their contributions and winners received prizes either by mail or through their schools.
