Columbia: Providence Road bridge over I-70 to be replaced; local partners invest in gateway improvements

Rezul News/10734414
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has announced plans to replace the Providence Road bridge over Interstate 70 as part of its Improve I-70 program. The construction is set to begin in late May and is expected to have significant impacts on travel in the area.

The Providence Road bridge serves as a vital connection between north and south Columbia and is a primary entrance into the Business Loop corridor. With this replacement project, MoDOT not only aims to modernize aging infrastructure but also improve safety, accessibility, and the overall appearance of this gateway into the city.

In partnership with the City of Columbia and the Business Loop Community Improvement District (CID), aesthetic and multimodal enhancements will be made to the new bridge. The CID Board has approved a contribution of $100,000 towards the City's I-70 Beautification Project, which will help fund features designed to create a more welcoming and visually distinctive entrance into The Loop.

The planned improvements for the new bridge include decorative lighting, enhanced railings and fencing, stone-pattern retaining walls, bridge facade elements, and integrated lighting features. These enhancements are intended to elevate the corridor's visual identity and create a more distinctive and inviting gateway for both residents and visitors.

According to CID Chair Michele Batye, "Improving infrastructure, enhancing safety, and beautifying entrances onto The Loop are all goals of the Loop CID. We're excited to help elevate this space to reflect the pride and energy of our community. We encourage others to join us in this transformational effort."

During recent community planning efforts, Columbia residents identified the intersection of Business Loop 70 and Providence Road as a central focal point of The Loop. Enhancing the bridge that directly connects to this area is expected to support economic activity, strengthen connectivity, and create a stronger sense of place for residents and visitors.

However, drivers should expect lane closures, detours, and changes in traffic patterns during the construction period. MoDOT advises travelers to plan ahead, allow extra time, and consider alternate routes when possible. More details about traffic impacts and project timelines will be shared by MoDOT as they become available.

The bridge replacement is part of MoDOT's broader Improve I-70 effort between Rocheport and Columbia, which focuses on improving safety, reliability, and capacity along this critical corridor.
