Columbia Fire Department responds to residential structure fire, March 20

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Fire Department (CFD) companies were called to a residential structure fire on Friday morning, March 20th. The incident occurred at approximately 9:56 a.m. in the 1900 block of Newton Drive.

Upon arrival, a CFD battalion chief was met with a two-story duplex engulfed in flames and heavy smoke. The first fire company arrived just one minute later and immediately began searching for any residents inside while simultaneously attacking the fire.

Inside the structure, firefighters encountered high heat and heavy fire. With the help of additional personnel, they were able to extinguish the flames within four minutes of arrival. A thorough search of the entire space was conducted to ensure no one was trapped inside.

The crews remained on scene for about two hours to complete overhaul of the structure and assist with the investigation led by Columbia Fire Marshals Battalion.

Fortunately, all occupants had already evacuated before CFD's arrival. However, one resident did sustain an unrelated injury and was transported to a local hospital via ambulance.

In total, five companies, three battalion chiefs, a safety officer and a fire marshal responded to this incident, totaling 22 personnel. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by authorities.
