Columbia Fire Department responds to electrical incident, March 12
Rezul News/10729905
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ On the evening of Thursday, March 12, the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) responded to an electrical incident in the 2900 block of Bray Avenue. According to initial dispatch reports, a tree had fallen onto a home and caused a building collapse. However, upon arrival at the scene at 9:46 p.m., CFD found light smoke in the area but no active fire.
Upon further investigation, firefighters discovered that a large tree had fallen in the backyard of a home and brought down conductors from the residence's electrical service entrance. This caused a working fire in the basement that was fed by tubing connected to a furnace. The quick response of CFD allowed them to shut off the gas line and extinguish the fire promptly.

However, due to damage sustained by the electrical service entrance, various components of the structure were electrified and caused multiple small fires. Despite turning off the main electric breaker, firefighters still faced dangerous conditions inside the structure. As a result, all fire ground operations were halted and personnel evacuated while waiting for City Utilities to arrive.
Once City Utilities arrived on scene, they disconnected the electrical service entrance and firefighters were able to resume their operations. A total of five fire companies, two Battalion Chiefs, a Safety Captain and a Fire Marshal responded to the incident with 21 personnel in total. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.
Fire companies remained on scene to extinguish any remaining hotspots while also working to limit damage to the already compromised structure. The cause of this incident is still under investigation by CFD officials.
