Columbia Fire Department responds to commercial structure fire, June 27

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - In the early hours of Friday, June 27, a commercial structure fire broke out in the vicinity of Business Loop 70 East and Grand Avenue. The Columbia Fire Department was immediately dispatched to the scene at 4:44 a.m.

Upon arrival, the first fire company, consisting of three crew members, wasted no time in assessing the situation. Within four minutes, they were met with a single-story strip mall engulfed in smoke. The team quickly sprang into action by deploying hose lines and gaining entry to the affected unit. Inside, they were met with intense heat and thick smoke as they searched for the source of the fire.

After locating the fire in a storage room near the back of the building, firefighters were able to contain it to its origin. Simultaneously, they conducted a thorough search for any potential victims and ventilated the structure by removing a portion of the roof. Thanks to their swift actions and coordinated efforts, adjacent units only suffered minimal damage from smoke and water.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries and no occupants were found inside the building at the time of the incident. A total of six units with 19 personnel responded to this emergency call.

The Columbia Fire Marshal Battalion is currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of this commercial fire. In light of this event, The Columbia Fire Department would like to remind everyone about important safety measures that can save lives in case of a fire. These include having working smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas, closing bedroom doors while sleeping, and knowing two ways out of every space in your home.

It is crucial to check your smoke alarms monthly by pressing their test button and change their batteries at least twice a year when adjusting clocks for Daylight Saving Time. It is also recommended to replace any smoke alarm over ten years old.
