Columbia Fire Department rescues subject from Capen Park cliff, March 31
Rezul News/10731414
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Fire Department (CFD) companies were dispatched to a fall on a Capen Park trail on Tuesday, March 31 at 3:40 p.m. The initial company was en route to the scene when dispatch received updated information that the individual had fallen approximately 30 feet off a cliff edge after the rocks gave way.
Upon receiving this new information, the initial crew upgraded their response to a technical rescue and an additional five companies, along with specialized technical rescue personnel and equipment, were dispatched. The first CFD company arrived within seven minutes and immediately began searching for the subject.
Using information provided by Boone County Joint Communications (BCJC), firefighters conducted searches of the trail. BCJC was able to provide the caller's GPS location that had been pinged during the 911 call. Within approximately 10 minutes, the individual was located and found to be conscious, breathing, and alert.
Additional companies arrived at the scene with specialized technical rescue equipment, including chainsaws to clear a path for equipment and ropes for creating a high-angle rescue rigging system. This allowed responders to safely descend to the individual's location.

After setting up and securing the rope system, two rescuers descended approximately 30 feet to make contact with the patient. They assessed for injuries and worked to remove them from the cliffside. At approximately 4:53 p.m., once safely lowered to the ground, CFD and University of Missouri Health Care personnel used a utility vehicle (UTV) for off-road patient transport before transferring them to an awaiting ambulance.
In total, four chiefs, one safety captain, and six companies comprising of 26 personnel responded to this incident. CFD would like to remind residents of Columbia's parks and trails to practice caution while enjoying these outdoor spaces. Some safety tips include being cautious when nearing a cliff edge as rocks may not be as stable as they seem, exercising care when walking or hiking on uneven terrain, wearing a helmet when biking, and letting someone know where you are going and when you plan to return. It is also important to bring a phone and share your location with a family member or friend.
The quick response and efficient teamwork of CFD and other personnel involved in this rescue highlight the importance of being prepared for any situation while enjoying outdoor activities. With proper caution and safety measures, residents can continue to enjoy Columbia's beautiful parks and trails without putting themselves at risk.
