Columbia: Cyclosporiasis detected in Boone County, residents urged to wash produce
Rezul News/10740562
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ COLUMBIA, MO - In the past week, Boone County has seen a spike in cyclosporiasis cases, with a total of eight reported. The Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) is collaborating with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) to determine if this increase is linked to the ongoing national outbreak. Initial investigations suggest that there may be local transmission.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there have been 1,645 confirmed domestic cases of cyclosporiasis since May 1. Additionally, there are approximately 5,100 cases that are still being analyzed to determine if they are related to domestic or travel-related exposure. However, it is believed that the actual number of cases is much higher than what has been reported.

Cyclosporiasis is a gastrointestinal illness caused by a parasite called Cyclospora. Symptoms typically appear about one week after exposure and can include frequent diarrhea, weight loss, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. In some cases, vomiting and a low-grade fever may also occur.
To reduce the risk of exposure to Cyclospora, it is recommended to thoroughly wash produce under clean running water before consumption. This includes produce that is labeled as pre-washed. It is also important to follow safe food handling practices such as washing hands frequently and cleaning counters, cutting boards, and utensils with hot soapy water after use. However, it should be noted that chemical disinfection or sanitization may not completely eliminate Cyclospora.
Individuals who experience prolonged or watery diarrhea should seek medical attention from a healthcare professional, especially if symptoms persist for more than a few days. It is important to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent further spread of this illness in the community.
