Colorado Springs: City to offer free activities for National Park and Recreation Month
Rezul News/10706968
~ As the summer season kicks into full swing, the City of Colorado Springs is gearing up to celebrate Park and Recreation Month this July. With a focus on engaging the community in outdoor recreation and fostering connections through local parks, the city has planned a variety of activities for residents to enjoy.
The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) department will be hosting two free events as part of the celebration. On Friday, July 11, Panorama Park will come alive with a silent disco, while Piñon Valley will host Music in the Park on Friday, July 25. These events will also feature youth activities such as kickball and basketball games.
But these events are not just about having fun – they also serve a greater purpose. Both events are part of the city's 1000 Gatherings Initiative, which was launched in May 2024. This community campaign aims to address mental health by encouraging residents to connect with one another through neighborhood gatherings. By building a social support system within their communities, residents can improve their overall well-being.
In addition to these events, PRCS is also hosting the "Build Your Own Park" challenge where residents can design their dream park on paper. The winners of this challenge will be featured on PRCS social media platforms. The annual Discover COS Calendar photo contest is also taking place this month, with winners being featured in the 2026 calendar.

Kim King, Assistant Director of PRCS, expressed her excitement for Park and Recreation Month: "July is a special time to celebrate the incredible recreational opportunities and resources we have in our city. We are fortunate to enjoy beautiful parks, scenic trails, and vibrant community spaces that enrich our lives." She also took the opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of park and recreation staff who make these experiences possible.
National Park and Recreation Month is an initiative by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) that aims to recognize the essential services provided by park and recreation professionals to the community. This year marks the 40th anniversary of NRPA's Park and Recreation Month celebrations. To learn more about this national campaign, visit NRPA.org.
Residents can find more information about July's activities at ColoradoSprings.gov/ParkandRecMonth. They can also discover ways to activate neighborhood parks through the city's Play Together program at ColoradoSprings.gov/PlayTogether. With over 160 neighborhood parks to choose from, there are plenty of opportunities for residents to get outside and enjoy all that their city has to offer during Park and Recreation Month.
