Colorado Springs: 8th Street Project plans shift on bridge over Fountain Creek

Rezul News/10730064
~ Colorado Springs - As the Fountain Creek bridge rehabilitation project nears its final stages, motorists using 8th Street will experience one last major traffic shift. According to officials, the west side of the bridge will be closed starting Wednesday, March 18, to allow for necessary construction work.

The closure is expected to begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and will continue until 5 a.m. on Thursday. During this time, traffic will remain open in both directions with one lane available for northbound traffic and two lanes for southbound traffic.

This phase of construction is estimated to take four weeks and will involve rehabilitating the bridge deck and repairing the sidewalk on the west side of the bridge. Once completed, the bridge will move into its final configuration which includes two through-lanes in each direction and a third northbound lane that will connect to the eastbound frontage road leading to U.S. Highway 24.

In addition, a new multi-use sidewalk will also be opened on the east side of the bridge. However, crews are expected to return in late spring for final asphalt paving and striping.

Meanwhile, south of the bridge, crews have completed drilling to locate underground utilities along 8th Street. Surprisingly, they discovered numerous previously unmarked utilities between Motor City Drive and the Fountain Creek bridge. As a result, project officials are now revising design documents and construction phases in order to minimize any additional impacts on motorists and local businesses.

Despite these changes, access to local businesses will remain open and clearly marked for drivers' convenience.
