City of St. Louis Launches New Online Building Permit Portal to Modernize and Streamline Approvals

~ The City of St. Louis has taken a major step towards modernizing its building permit process with the launch of a new online portal. This initiative, announced by Mayor Cara Spencer, aims to streamline the application process, reduce approval times, and limit the need for in-person visits to City Hall.

According to Mayor Spencer, this move was prompted by demands from both the development community and everyday citizens for a simpler and more efficient way to apply for building permits. She believes that this is crucial in order to reverse the city's 70-year population decline and provide support for those affected by last year's tornado.

The new online portal allows residents, contractors, and developers to submit applications, upload plans, pay fees, and track permit status entirely online. By integrating review workflows across various departments such as zoning, planning, and inspections, the portal aims to improve coordination between departments and eliminate delays caused by manual routing and paper-based processes.

Building Commissioner Ed Ware expressed his excitement about this new system, stating that it represents a major step forward in how they serve the public. He believes that by making the permit process faster, more accessible, and more predictable, they are not only saving time for their customers but also making it easier for them to invest in St. Louis neighborhoods.

Contractors who regularly pull permits have already seen significant time savings with this new system. Jeff Kujath of Kujath Construction shared his experience saying that before the online portal, getting a permit could take up an entire day at City Hall. However now he can do it online in a fraction of the time which allows him to focus more on his projects rather than dealing with paperwork.

Similarly, John Meller of City Carport has also seen dramatic improvements in turnaround times since using the online portal. He mentioned that he has received permits back within three days compared to weeks before. Additionally, if any information is missing from his application, he can easily fix it online without having to make a trip to City Hall or go back and forth on the phone.

The launch of this portal is a testament to the City's commitment to improving customer service, supporting responsible development, and utilizing technology to deliver more efficient government services.
