City of Spokane Funds 50 New Shelter Beds, Mobile Medication Assisted Treatment Services
Rezul News/10721465
~ Spokane, WA - In response to Mayor Lisa Brown's recent emergency declaration, the City of Spokane has taken swift action to address the growing issue of homelessness in the community. The declaration, issued in late October, has allowed the city to bypass its standard contracting process and quickly allocate funds to where they are most needed.
Under this emergency declaration, the City has contracted with four local homeless services providers to open additional emergency shelter beds and fund mobile medication assisted treatment (MAT) services. These providers include Revive Counseling Services, Jewels Helping Hands, the YWCA, and Community, Advocacy, and Treatment (CAT).
Individuals seeking shelter can now find information about these new beds on sheltermespokane.org. This will help connect those in need with available resources throughout the city.
In addition to expanding emergency shelter capacity, the City has also contracted with CAT to provide mobile MAT services. This will allow police, navigation center staff, and street outreach teams to immediately connect individuals with necessary services and treatment.

The emergency declaration was ratified by the City Council on November 10th. At that time, the Community, Housing and Human Services Department had already begun the standard funding process for eviction prevention efforts. However, with the emergency declaration in place, the Administration was able to expedite this process and allocate nearly $3 million in funding to organizations such as Career Path Services, Carl Maxey Center, Catholic Charities, KCBA Housing Justice Project, Nuestras Raices, SNAP, and Transitions.
Mayor Brown emphasized the importance of taking action as colder weather approaches. "It is imperative that we do what we can to keep people safe and sheltered," she stated. "This emergency declaration was critical in helping us expand our capacity for emergency shelter and provide much-needed assistance to those at risk of becoming homeless."
The YWCA's Director of Housing Jennifer Haynes-Harter also expressed gratitude for this initiative. "For survivors of intimate partner domestic violence experiencing severe and immediate danger, access to safe temporary shelter can be lifesaving," she said. "We deeply appreciate the City's leadership and collaboration in making sure our most vulnerable community members can reach safety when they need it most."
The City of Spokane remains committed to addressing the issue of homelessness and working with local organizations to provide support and resources for those in need. With these new emergency shelter beds and mobile MAT services, they hope to make a positive impact on the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness in the community.
