City of Naperville to Host Free Compost Giveaway for Residents
Rezul News/10734355
~ Naperville, IL - The City of Naperville, in collaboration with DuPage County, Will County, Midwest Compost, LLC, and Groot Industries, is excited to announce a free finished compost giveaway for Naperville residents. This event will take place on Saturday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at two convenient locations in north and south Naperville. Residents are encouraged to attend and collect compost for use in their gardens and landscapes.
To ensure the best experience for residents, the event will be held at two sites: the City-owned lot at 91st/Wolf's Crossing, located at 2601 Wolf's Crossing Road in Will County, and the Public Works Service Center at 180 Fort Hill Drive in DuPage County. Residents are advised to bring their own buckets or bags to collect compost.
The ready-to-use compost has been generously donated by Midwest Compost, LLC - one of two IEPA-permitted landscape waste facilities where Naperville's yard waste and food scraps are processed. Groot Industries, the City's garbage and recycling contractor, will transport the compost to both locations free of charge. On-site staff from Public Works and Sustainability will be available to assist residents with shoveling compost into their containers. Signage will also be in place to direct traffic flow and compost collection. Please note that residents may take up to 20 gallons of compost on a first-come, first-served basis.

According to Sustainability Manager Ben Mjolsness, this event aligns perfectly with International Compost Awareness Week which takes place during the first week of May. "We have seen a growing interest among Naperville residents in composting through our successful Food Scrap Composting Program," said Mjolsness. "This event provides an opportunity for residents to witness the benefits of composting from start to finish while also highlighting sustainable services available in Naperville."
Compost is considered "finished" when it is black, crumbly, has an earthy smell, and organic materials like food scraps and leaves are mostly unrecognizable. Using compost in landscaping has numerous benefits such as boosting soil nutrients, improving structure, increasing water retention, resisting erosion, and acting as a natural fertilizer - all of which promote healthy plants and a healthier environment.
