City of Long Beach Launches Local Hiring Preferences
Rezul News/10717759
Long Beach, CA ~ The City of Long Beach has taken a significant step towards creating a thriving, locally-driven workforce with the launch of its Local Hiring Preferences initiative. This new program offers enhanced consideration to eligible applicants during the City's hiring process, reinforcing its commitment to fostering a workforce that is rooted in opportunity, equity, inclusivity, and mutual investment for the future of Long Beach.
According to Mayor Rex Richardson, the Local Hiring Preferences initiative builds upon the foundation laid by Measure JB, also known as the Long Beach Jobs Promise. This measure aimed to strengthen local hiring and economic opportunities within the city. By prioritizing local talent, Mayor Richardson believes that the City can create a workforce that is not only skilled and passionate but also deeply connected to their community.
With over 500 job opportunities available across 23 departments, the City offers a wide range of career paths for individuals with various passions and skill sets. The implementation of Local Hiring Preferences will give preference points to eligible Long Beach residents, graduates of local institutions, internal candidates, and those who have completed internships and apprenticeships. To determine eligibility and receive preference points, applicants must complete the Local Hiring Preferences Questionnaire as part of their job application process for classified positions. However, candidates must still meet minimum requirements and pass any required assessments before preference points can be added.

It is important to note that local preference points are awarded in addition to the City's existing veterans' preference points. These points are still available to veterans, disabled veterans, spouses of disabled veterans, and un-remarried spouses of deceased veterans. While preference points may improve a candidate's ranking on an eligible list, it does not guarantee selection or advancement in the hiring process. Final decisions are made by each department based on interviews, references, and other factors.
For more information about eligibility criteria and verification requirements for Local Hiring Preferences or answers to frequently asked questions about this program, interested individuals can visit longbeach.gov/jobs. The City's Jobs webpage also provides job seekers with access to current openings and job resources within the City.
Bryce M. Tyler, the Director of the Human Resources Department, expressed the City's commitment to investing in its community by prioritizing local talent. He believes that by reducing barriers to employment and creating pathways for locals to build rewarding careers in public service, the City can foster economic growth and deeper community connections.
