(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - As winter weather continues to affect the city, the City of Columbia is taking necessary measures to respond and keep residents safe. With unpredictable weather patterns, residents are advised to closely monitor the forecast and road conditions in the mid-Missouri area. The City has also provided updates on their social media platforms and website.

The Public Works department, led by John Ogan, has been working tirelessly to plow and treat residential neighborhood streets with salt. Despite pavement temperatures remaining below freezing, they are above the threshold for salt to be effective. Plowing began in outlying areas of Columbia and is gradually moving towards the city center. This approach is alternated from one winter weather event to the next. For those who need to travel during this time, it is advised to drive at low speeds, especially on unplowed neighborhood streets. Drivers should also avoid tailgating and allow extra distance for stopping.

Go COMO Transit services have been impacted by the weather as well. Paratransit service was canceled on January 26th but is expected to resume normally on Tuesday, January 27th. Fixed-route and Tiger Line bus services are also expected to operate as usual. To stay updated on any service changes or delays, riders can use the ETA SPOT app or sign up for text alerts at Alerts.CoMo.gov.

Jason West from Utilities has announced that all collections will remain on schedule starting Tuesday, January 27th. In order for trash collection and snow removal to be efficient, residents are reminded to follow guidelines for roll cart placement. Collection crews are also responding to missed collections and residents can report any issues by contacting the Contact Center or reporting it online.

Mike Heimos from Sustainability has provided tips for smarter salt use during this time. It is recommended to shovel first in order to remove as much snow and ice as possible, as this will reduce the amount of salt needed and make it more effective. Using just one mugful (12 oz) of salt for a 20-foot driveway or sidewalk is enough. Any excess salt should be swept up, as visible salt on dry pavement means it is no longer working and can harm local streams through storm drains and ditch systems.

Residents are reminded that it is their responsibility to keep sidewalks in front of or adjacent to their property free from snow and ice, according to City ordinance. This helps ensure the safety and accessibility of the community for all.

In terms of public health, Austin Krohn has announced that several warming centers and shelters will remain open regardless of weather conditions. However, residents are advised to check with the location before going due to changing conditions. Animal Control will only respond to extreme emergencies during this weather event, such as a vicious dog running loose or a gravely injured animal. Reports can be made by calling 573.449.1888, but response times may be delayed depending on road conditions. Residents are encouraged to bring their pets inside during extreme weather.
