City of Columbia invites public input on Pedestrian Safety Ordinance
Rezul News/10721373
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ The City of Columbia has taken a step towards improving pedestrian safety with the launch of their new BeHeardCoMo page. This platform will allow members of the public to provide their input on a proposed Pedestrian Safety Ordinance.
The ordinance was developed after a thorough Street and Intersection Pedestrian Safety Study, which analyzed local crash data, roadway conditions, and nationally accepted safety practices. The study found that certain measures needed to be put in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians in high-traffic or high-speed roadway environments.

Under the proposed ordinance, there would be restrictions on when pedestrians can stand or remain on certain medians. It would also outline expectations for crossing behavior in specific roadways or intersections that meet certain criteria, such as a speed limit of 35 mph or higher, traffic volumes greater than 15,000 vehicles per day, or medians less than 6 feet wide.
To gather feedback from the community, the BeHeardCoMo page will be open for public comment until January 23. This feedback will then be used to inform the Columbia City Council before they consider the ordinance on February 2, 2026. Residents can access the proposed ordinance and the full pedestrian safety study on the BeHeard page at BeHeard.CoMo.gov/Pedestrian-Safety-Ordinance.
