City of Boston Partners with Local Barbershops and Salons to Offer Free Back-to-School Haircuts and Styles

BOSTON ~ Boston's Office of Cultural Affairs has announced a new initiative aimed at helping Boston youth start the school year with confidence. The program, called Back to School Haircuts & Styles, will offer free or low-cost haircuts and hairstyles for families in need.

According to Alexandra Valdez, Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of Boston, the initiative recognizes that preparing for a new school year goes beyond just buying school supplies. "It's also about making sure our young people walk into the classroom feeling confident, proud, and ready to be themselves," she stated.

The program will partner with barbershops and salons across various neighborhoods in Boston, including Allston/Brighton, East Boston, Dorchester, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Mission Hill, Roslindale, Roxbury, and West Roxbury. Families must register by August 31st in order to participate. Once registered, they can redeem their haircut or style at any participating location from September 1st through September 11th.

Valdez emphasized the importance of hair in many communities as a form of culture and self-expression. "Through this initiative, we're supporting families with one less back-to-school expense while partnering with the neighborhood barbers and stylists who are trusted members of our communities," she explained.

The initiative not only benefits families but also reflects Cultural Affairs' commitment to uplifting local businesses in Boston's neighborhoods. Felix Barbershop owner Felix expressed his excitement about being a part of this program as both a business owner and a parent whose children attend Boston Public Schools. "I know how important it is for kids to start the school year feeling confident and excited," he said. "Barbershops are more than just businesses in our neighborhoods; they are places where families connect and community is built."
