~ Boston Celebrates Launch of 'Color Flows on Winter Street' Program
The City of Boston is buzzing with excitement as it celebrates the launch of 'Color Flows on Winter Street,' a multi-week program that aims to bring fun and interactive events to Downtown Crossing. The program, which kicked off on October 16, will run until November 16 and will feature colorful art installations, food trucks, and cultural programming daily between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
This initiative is part of the City's broader effort to reimagine how Boston's streets and pedestrian zones can be safer, more engaging, and enjoyable for all. Mayor Michelle Wu expressed her enthusiasm for the program, stating that it marks an exciting time for downtown space. She also emphasized the importance of engaging community members through creativity and creating vibrant activations and interactive gathering spaces.
Chief of Planning Kairos Shen echoed this sentiment, highlighting the role that streets play in creating welcoming and thriving communities. He also noted that 'Color Flows' is just one aspect of the City's efforts to design infrastructure that is people-centered and promotes socialization.
Joseph Henry, Director of Cultural Planning for the Mayor's Office of Arts & Culture, emphasized the program's focus on showcasing Boston's creative talent. From Massiel Grullón's stunning mural installation to a block party by Club Indigo and a curated thrift fashion experience by Select Markets, 'Color Flows' offers a glimpse into the vibrant future of Downtown Crossing as a place where culture, commerce, and community come together.

This activation is one of the first implementation projects stemming from the Boston Design Vision. It serves as a testing ground for new approaches to transforming public spaces into hubs of community, culture, and economic investment.
Deputy Chief of Urban Design Diana Fernandez Bibeau explained that this initiative is about designing spaces that support a strong local economy while enhancing quality of life for people of all ages. She believes that creative design solutions, like 'Color Flows,' will shape the future of Downtown Crossing as a welcoming, joyful, and dynamic space.
The program also builds on the Wu Administration's support and investments in downtown. The SPACE Grant Program has filled two vacant storefronts on Winter Street with a new boba tea shop, Cha Feo, and the Downtown Boston Alliance's upcoming small business incubator and welcome center. Other SPACE Grantees can be found throughout Downtown Crossing, including Jamaican food at Jamaica Mi Hungry on Devonshire Street, charcuterie and wine at Boardeaux on High Street, and local escape room Boxaroo on Court Street. Additionally, the City has committed $200,000 to support Creative Enterprises in making Downtown Crossing their home.
Michael J. Nichols, President of the Downtown Boston Alliance, praised the City's investment in activating one of Boston's most utilized streets. He believes that Winter Street serves as a vital gateway to Downtown and its businesses will greatly benefit from the infusion of art, family-friendly programming, and an opportunity to enjoy one of Downtown's beloved dining institutions – jm Curley's.

Nate Lash, Public Realm Manager for the Streets Cabinet, highlighted how 'Color Flows' demonstrates how streets and sidewalks can be platforms for creativity and expression while also serving as vibrant open spaces that foster meaningful interactions among people of all ages and backgrounds. He believes that instead of just being a means to get from one place to another, streets can become places where people want to be.
Visitors to Winter Street can expect to find food and beverage vendors including local restaurant jm Curley, public art such as a street mural by Massiel Grullón, planting and seating areas, a lighting installation, interactive games and cultural programming. Special events are also planned throughout the month including a family festival and block party.
'Color Flows on Winter Street' is a testament to the City of Boston's commitment to creating a vibrant and inclusive community. With its colorful and engaging offerings, this program is sure to bring joy and excitement to Downtown Crossing for weeks to come.
