Chicago: Mayor Brandon Johnson Joins Apostolic Church of God for Groundbreaking of $580 Million Woodlawn Central Development
Rezul News/10744284
CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with community leaders, elected officials, and development partners, gathered today to celebrate the groundbreaking of Woodlawn Central. The $580 million mixed-use development, led by the Apostolic Church of God and Pastor J. Byron Brazier, will transform approximately eight acres surrounding the church into a vibrant residential and cultural district along the 63rd Street corridor.
Mayor Johnson expressed his excitement for this project, stating that it is an important moment for Woodlawn and the entire South Side. He acknowledged the history of disinvestment in the neighborhood but believes that Woodlawn Central will bring new opportunities and hope without displacing long-time residents.
Once completed, Woodlawn Central is expected to include 870 to 1,000 residential units, a hotel, retail and office space, cultural and performance venues, an urban farm, and green space. This development will not only bring new housing options but also create jobs and amenities for the community.
Bishop Byron T. Brazier shared his vision for Woodlawn Central as a continuation of his late father's legacy. Bishop Arthur M. Brazier was a civil rights leader and longtime pastor who dedicated his life to strengthening Woodlawn through economic development and neighborhood investment. The Apostolic Church of God has continued this commitment through its presence and leadership in the community.

The first phase of Woodlawn Central represents a $134 million investment and will include 104 residential units with 22 affordable homes, a boutique hotel with approximately 160 rooms, retail space, parking for approximately 300 cars and bicycles, as well as two 14-story towers connected by a shared podium.
This development also aligns with the growth happening on Chicago's South Side. With its close proximity to the Obama Presidential Center, Woodlawn Central will connect residents and visitors to one of Chicago's emerging cultural destinations while supporting economic growth in the surrounding area. Its transit-oriented design will also provide easy access to jobs and services throughout the city.
Woodlawn Central is a testament to the commitment of the Apostolic Church of God and its dedication to the community. It is a project that not only brings new development but also honors the history, culture, and institutions that make Woodlawn a unique and vibrant neighborhood. As Mayor Johnson stated, this groundbreaking marks a new chapter for Woodlawn, one defined by opportunity, stability, dignity, and hope.
