Celebrating the Copley Plaza Hotel, Boston's New Landmark

~ The Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel, a historic landmark in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood, was recently celebrated for its designation as a City of Boston Landmark. The event drew the attendance of various individuals, including historic preservationists, community members, and City officials such as Elizabeth Sherva, Deputy Director of the Office of Historic Preservation and Executive Director of the Boston Landmarks Commission (BLC); BLC Architectural Historian, Jennifer Gaugler; and Landmarks Commissioners Vineet Gupta, Jeffrey Heyne, and Justine Orlando.

During the celebration, Sherva emphasized the importance of preservation as not just about physical structures but also about stewardship and the memories associated with them. She recognized the staff and management of Fairmont Copley Plaza as caretakers who have successfully balanced preserving its historic value with modern needs.

Sherva stated that landmarking is not about halting change but rather identifying what is significant and managing change to ensure that those qualities endure. She added that the goal is not to freeze the hotel in time but to allow it to evolve while remaining recognizable as the beloved Copley Plaza Hotel by generations of Bostonians and visitors.

The Office of Historic Preservation and Boston Landmarks Commission also recognized Architectural Historian Jennifer Gaugler for her research and preparation of the Landmark Study Report. They also thanked General Manager Tabish Siddiquie and his team at Fairmont Copley Plaza for their partnership throughout the designation process.

Designed by renowned architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, who also designed New York's Plaza Hotel, Fairmont Copley Plaza has been an iconic part of Boston's Back Bay streetscape since its opening in 1912. Its exceptional Italian Renaissance Revival architecture stands out prominently at the corner of St. James Avenue and Copley Square.

The landmark designation came after a thorough Landmark Study Report was completed. This report documents the property's history, architecture, and significance and establishes standards to guide future changes. The designation recognizes the building for its structural innovations, elaborate interiors, and its role in the history and development of Copley Square.

The process of landmark designation is a deliberate public process that involves researching, evaluating, and presenting properties to the Boston Landmarks Commission for consideration. This process provides an opportunity to understand what makes each historic property significant.

From a handwritten petition signed by 10 Boston voters in 1989 to its designation as a City of Boston Landmark in 2026, Fairmont Copley Plaza's story showcases how preservation advocacy can ensure that significant places remain part of Boston's future. Its designation as a landmark is a testament to its enduring value and contribution to the city's rich history.
