Boston: White Stadium Neighborhood Advisory Council Announced

~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, in collaboration with Boston Legacy FC, has announced the formation of the White Stadium Neighborhood Advisory Council (WSNAC). This 15-member council will serve as an advisory body for the White Stadium project, engaging with communities and providing input on various aspects of the project.

According to the lease and governing agreements of the project, WSNAC will act as a structured forum for information-sharing, discussion, and community feedback during the construction and operation of White Stadium. The council will represent the voices of neighbors and park users on matters such as stadium operations, transportation, scheduling, logistics, and other topics that are of interest to the neighborhood.

The members of WSNAC have been carefully selected to represent a diverse range of stakeholders. This includes residents from Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, and Mattapan; park users; Boston Public Schools (BPS) student athletes; local businesses; faith leaders; and youth sports organizations. They will receive regular updates from the City, BPS Athletics, Parks Department, and Boston Legacy FC. In turn, they will provide ongoing community feedback and perspectives on construction progress and stadium operations.

Mayor Michelle Wu expressed her enthusiasm for this new council stating that it "will help ensure that the community continues to steer investments in two of our most beautiful and treasured public spaces in Boston—White Stadium and Franklin Park." She believes that this group will play a crucial role in ensuring that the project reflects the needs and priorities of residents.

Kim Miner, Chief External Affairs Officer for Boston Legacy FC also emphasized the importance of community partnership in this project. She stated that WSNAC formalizes their commitment to an ongoing partnership with the community. Miner believes that this council will play a critical role in building trust through transparency and engagement.

The inaugural members of WSNAC have been appointed for two-year terms. They include Luis Perez Demorizi (Executive Director of Franklin Park), Matt Balk (Boston Legacy FC Head of Facilities), and Anshi Moreno Jimenez (City Coordinator) as co-chairs. The ex-officio members are City Councilors Brian Worrell, Benjamin J. Weber, and Rev. Miniard Culpepper. The general members include representatives from Boston Public Schools Athletics, youth sports coaches, BPS student athletes, the Franklin Park Coalition President, a local business owner and BPS parent, and representatives from Dorchester, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, and Mattapan.

As per the Cooperation Agreement negotiated in December 2023, WSNAC will be established at the earliest possible time. It will include District Councilors and representatives of residents from park-adjacent neighborhoods as well as park users and Boston Legacy FC.

After the inaugural season at White Stadium, WSNAC will review the Annual Stadium Operations Report submitted by Boston Legacy FC. This report will cover various aspects such as transportation management, sound management, lighting, trash management, event scheduling, and more. The council will also review the annual Transportation Management and Operations Plan and provide feedback as a representative body of residents.

WSNAC members will also have a say in the Community Annual Fund which is a $500,000 commitment that will increase annually by 3%. This fund is entirely funded by Boston Legacy FC and will be established by the City with guidance from its own advisory body. It is part of over $252 million in privately-funded community benefits over the next 15 years stemming from the White Stadium project.

The creation of WSNAC highlights Mayor Michelle Wu's commitment to community engagement and partnership in major projects like White Stadium. With this council in place, residents can rest assured that their voices will be heard throughout the construction and operation of this beloved public space.
