Boston: Resolution Supports Extension of Summer Hospitality Pilot

~ Boston City Council Shows Support for Extension of Liquor License Pilot Program

In a move to support the city's hospitality industry and enhance the overall experience for residents and visitors, the Boston City Council has adopted a resolution in favor of extending the temporary state pilot program for liquor licenses and designated public consumption districts. The program, which was originally signed into law by Governor Maura Healey on June 8, 2026, is set to expire on July 31, 2026.

The resolution, offered by Councilors Breadon, Worrell, and Louijeune, highlights the success of the pilot program since its implementation. More than 200 bars and restaurants in Boston have been granted extended operating hours under the program, and two designated public consumption "social districts" have been established downtown.

Recognizing the positive impact of the pilot on both businesses and city life, Councilors expressed their support for Senate Bill 3112. This bill, filed by Senators Barry R. Finegold and Julian Cyr, would extend the pilot through August 2026. The Council also noted that Boston's hospitality industry continues to face challenges such as inflation and labor shortages, making an extension of the program crucial for attracting residents and visitors during one of the city's busiest months.

The resolution further emphasizes that extending the pilot would allow Boston to fully benefit from its peak tourism season before making any decisions about its future participation in the program. With this in mind, the Council has shown its strong support for Senate Bill 3112 and Boston's continued involvement in the pilot should it become law.
