Boston: Honoring Ghana's Independence
Rezul News/10728812
~ In a recent Council meeting, a resolution was adopted to recognize the independence of Ghana. The West African country achieved independence on March 6, 1957, under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah. Councilor Louijeune proposed the measure, which honors Ghana as the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from European colonial rule.
The resolution also acknowledges Ghana's significant impact on Black liberation movements across Africa and the African diaspora. It highlights the country's rich pre-colonial history and its struggle against Portuguese, Dutch, and British control. Additionally, it recognizes Ghana's post-independence leadership in promoting Pan-African unity and global diplomacy.

The Council also took note of the ongoing contributions of the Ghanaian diaspora in Boston and notable Ghanaian leaders such as Kofi Annan, Hilla Limann, and Ama Ata Aidoo. It commends Ghana for its stable government, strong performance in health, economic growth, and human development.
Furthermore, the Council eagerly anticipates welcoming the Ghanaian national soccer team, known as the Black Stars, to Boston for the FIFA World Cup. To celebrate Ghana's Independence Day on March 6th in 2026, a flag-raising ceremony will be held at 11 AM on City Hall Plaza. This event will serve as a tribute to Ghana's achievements and its ongoing contributions to global society.
