~ As the Chinese New Year approaches, the city of Boston is gearing up for its annual celebration in Chinatown. This year's festivities will take place on Sunday, March 1, 2026 and will feature a traditional Lion Dance. In order to ensure safety and accessibility for all attendees, certain streets will have parking restrictions in place throughout the day.

According to the event organizers, parking restrictions will be enforced on Beach Street, Harrison Avenue, Hudson Street, Oxford Street, and Tyler Street. These restrictions will be in effect from Hudson Street to Washington Street on Beach Street and from Essex Street to Kneeland Street on Harrison Avenue. Additionally, both sides of Hudson Street from Kneeland Street to Beach Street will have parking restrictions as well as both sides of Oxford Street from Beach Street to Essex Street and both sides of Tyler Street from Kneeland Street to Beach Street.

For those planning on attending the event, organizers are encouraging attendees to walk, bike or take public transit. Information about Bluebikes, the regional bike share service can be found on their website while information about the MBTA can be found online. The MBTA is advising riders to purchase round-trip tickets instead of one-way tickets for a faster return trip. Walking is also a great way to move around during the event.

In Roslindale, there is an important road closure that drivers should be aware of. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has announced that the Canterbury Street Bridge will be closed starting Friday, September 12 at 9:00 p.m. This closure is due to findings from a recent bridge inspection that deemed it necessary for safety reasons. While vehicular traffic will not be allowed on the bridge until further notice, pedestrian access will still be maintained.

To navigate around this closure, drivers should follow detour signage in place which utilizes Hyde Park Avenue, Cummins Highway, Rowe Street, Brown Avenue and Seymour Street. The eastbound detour will follow Seymour Street to Brown Avenue to Cummins Highway while the westbound detour will follow Hyde Park Avenue to Cummins Highway to Rowe Street to Seymour Street. Drivers should expect delays, reduce speed and use caution when traveling through the affected areas.

In South Boston, preparations are underway for the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and Road Race on Sunday, March 15, 2026. This year, the parade will be taking a different route than in previous years, using East Sixth Street instead of East Fifth Street and traveling in reverse direction. The parade route will start at Dorchester Street and continue on Telegraph Street to Thomas Park (southerly arm), then onto G Street, East Sixth Street, K Street, East Fourth Street, P Street and finally East Broadway to West Broadway.

To accommodate the parade and road race, several streets will be closed to through-traffic for the duration of the event. These include Dorchester Avenue from Gillette Park to Old Colony Avenue and from Damrell Street to Kemp Street; Boston Street from Dorchester Street heading southerly to Ellery Street; Preble Street from Dorchester Avenue to Old Colony Avenue; Dexter Street from Dorchester Avenue to Ellery Street; Damrell street from Old Colony Avenue to Dorchester Avenue; Telegraph street from Thomas Park to Dorchester street; Thomas Park on both sides of southerly arm (normal traffic flow) from Telegraph street to G street; G street on both sides from Story street to #96 G street; East Sixth street on both sides from K street to G street; K street on both sides from East Fourth street to East Sixth street; East Fourth street on both sides from P street to K street; P street on both sides from East Broadway to East Fourth street; East Broadway on both sides from Dorchester avenue to P street; West Broadway on both sides from Dorchester avenue to Dorchester street; A street on both sides from Binford street to West Broadway; West Second street on both sides from Dorchester avenue to A street; Binford street on both sides from A street heading northwesterly to end at 45 Binford street; East First street on the north side (opposite M Street Park) from driveway out of the MBTA Bus Layover opposite the basketball court to M Street; West Fourth street on both sides from B street to A street; West Sixth Street on both sides from F Street to Dorchester Street (it has been requested to have the area cleared two (2) hours before the 11:00 a.m. race); and F Street on the southeast side (odd side – Boys & Girls Club side) from West Sixth Street to Bowen Street.

The city advises drivers to plan accordingly and find alternative routes if necessary. With these preparations in place, Boston is ready for another successful St. Patrick's Day celebration.
