Boston Emergency Medical Services Celebrate New EMTS and Recent Promotions

~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, along with Boston Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), gathered at Faneuil Hall to celebrate the graduation of 26 new EMTs and the promotion of eight EMS members. The ceremony marked a significant moment for the city as it continues to strengthen its emergency response services in light of increasing demand.

The graduates, who are all state-certified EMTs, successfully completed the rigorous Boston EMS Recruit Academy. This intensive training program equips recruits with the necessary skills to provide high-quality emergency care throughout the city. With this new class joining their ranks, Boston EMS is better equipped to handle any emergency situation.

Mayor Michelle Wu congratulated the new EMT graduates and commended them for their commitment to a profession rooted in service, compassion, and skill. She emphasized the crucial role that EMS plays in delivering care across the city and expressed her gratitude for their dedication to keeping every neighborhood safe and healthy.

Boston EMS Chief James Hooley also welcomed the new class of EMTs, acknowledging their impressive dedication and heart. He reminded them that their training has prepared them for real emergencies, fast-changing situations, and the responsibility of caring for people when they need it most. He also highlighted the significance of their role at this moment in time as Boston prepares for major events such as FIFA World Cup events, Sail Boston, and commemorations for its 250th anniversary.

The Boston EMS Recruit Academy is a full-time paid program that combines classroom instruction with field training to prepare EMTs for a wide range of life-threatening emergencies. This includes mass casualty incidents, active shooter situations, hazardous materials exposure, and human trafficking response. During their training, these graduates collectively responded to over 3,000 9-1-1 calls where they treated patients experiencing various medical emergencies.

Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, Commissioner of Public Health for the City of Boston, also congratulated the graduates and those advancing in their EMS careers. She emphasized the critical role that Boston EMS plays in promoting health and wellness in the city. She expressed her gratitude for their decision to serve, which ensures that lifesaving care reaches all residents and visitors in every neighborhood. Dr. Ojikutu also praised their compassion and purpose in delivering skilled care during moments of crisis.

In addition to celebrating the new EMT graduates, the ceremony also recognized the recent promotion of six Emergency Medical Technicians to the rank of Paramedic. These individuals successfully completed an intensive paramedic program, departmental promotional exams, and a demanding three-month field internship.

The department also honored two members who were promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, bringing a combined 25 years of experience to the supervisory ranks.

Boston EMS is one of the busiest municipal EMS providers in New England, responding to over 141,000 emergency medical incidents per year.
