~ Boston City Council Recognizes Dominican Independence Day

This week, the Boston City Council unanimously passed a resolution to officially recognize February 27 as Dominican Independence Day in the city. The resolution, proposed by Councilors Pepen, Santana, and Mejia, who all have Dominican heritage, commemorates the 1844 independence of the Dominican Republic as a sovereign nation.

The resolution also pays tribute to the bravery and heroism of the country's founding fathers - Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Matías Ramón Mella. It acknowledges their significant contributions in establishing an independent nation.

Boston's Dominican community makes up approximately 6 percent of the city's population and has played a vital role in enriching its cultural diversity. They have made significant contributions across various neighborhoods, with over 500 businesses and hundreds of millions of dollars in spending. Additionally, many Dominicans serve in public service roles within the city.

The passing of this resolution reaffirms Boston's commitment to honoring the heritage of all its communities, especially its immigrant neighbors who have worked hard to build new lives in the city. It also recognizes Dominican Independence Day as an opportunity to celebrate their vibrant culture, including dance, cuisine, music, and traditions.

To mark this special day, a flag-raising ceremony will be held on March 3rd at 11 AM on City Hall Plaza. This event will serve as a symbol of unity and pride for both Boston's Dominican community and the city as a whole.
