Boston: Council Approves $32.6 Million for Community Preservation Projects

~ In a move to support the improvement of Boston neighborhoods, the City Council has approved a series of appropriations from the Community Preservation Fund. These funds will go towards affordable housing, historic preservation, and open space projects across the city.

The Council has authorized $32.6 million in funding for community preservation projects for Fiscal Year 2026. This decision was made based on recommendations from the Community Preservation Committee. The breakdown of the funding includes $16.3 million for affordable housing, $8.15 million for historic preservation, and another $8.15 million for open space and recreational use projects.

These investments will have a significant impact on enhancing the quality of life in Boston neighborhoods. Some of the initiatives that will be supported by these funds include renovating playgrounds, improving parks and community gardens, expanding the city's tree canopy, preserving historic buildings and artifacts, assisting first-time homebuyers, and constructing new affordable housing units.

In addition to these appropriations, the Council also approved $1.76 million for administrative and operating expenses of the Community Preservation Committee for Fiscal Year 2027. They have also set aside $39.6 million for future appropriations towards community preservation projects in FY27.

The Community Preservation Fund was established in 2016 after the adoption of the Community Preservation Act. It is funded through a 1% property tax-based surcharge as well as state funding. Since its inception, this program has awarded over $230 million to numerous projects across Boston. With this latest round of approvals, total funding is expected to exceed $260 million.

This decision by the City Council highlights their commitment to improving Boston neighborhoods and preserving its history while also providing affordable housing options and promoting green spaces for recreational use. The impact of these investments will be felt by residents for years to come.
