All Long Beach Open Coastal Swimming Areas Temporarily Closed Due to Local Sewage Spill
Rezul News/10749813
Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach has temporarily closed all open coastal swimming areas after an estimated 27,000 gallons of sewage spilled near Livingston Drive and Second Street, the city said.
The discharge began at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, and was linked to a break in a force main, a pressurized wastewater pipe, according to a report from the Long Beach Utilities Department.
Utilities rerouted wastewater through a bypass line, and the city's contractor, Ocean Blue, was activated to assist with cleanup. An emergency contractor was also called in to begin repairs, the department said.

City Health Officer Dr. Cliff Okada ordered the closures. The city said state law requires beaches to be temporarily closed and warning signs posted in such circumstances as a precaution until water quality meets state requirements.
Environmental health specialists with the Long Beach Health Department are monitoring coastal water quality. Sampling will continue until results comply with state recreational water quality standards, the city said.
Long Beach has more than six miles of public beach, and the city routinely collects and tests weekly water samples for bacteria. Officials urged the public to follow posted warnings and avoid contact with the water while closures remain in effect.
For updates, residents can call the city's Water Hotline at 562-570-4199 or visit longbeach.gov/beachwaterquality.
