After the Midterms, Congress Holds a Key to U.S.-Türkiye Relations
Rezul News/10750375
MANHATTAN, N.Y. - Rezul -- Democrats won control of both the Senate and the House in the recent midterm elections. For the next two years, Washington will operate under divided government, and more of the decisions that shape U.S.-Türkiye relations will pass through Congress.
Defense Cooperation Will Run Through Capitol Hill
Türkiye is a NATO ally with the alliance's second-largest military and a fast-growing defense industry. Questions such as the F-35 program, the CAATSA sanctions and future co-production projects cannot be settled by the executive branch alone. Major sales require congressional review, and sanctions laws were written by Congress.
That is why steady, respectful engagement with lawmakers matters. Members of both parties should hear directly about Türkiye's contributions to NATO, its role as a regional mediator and the value of defense-industrial partnership for American jobs and allied supply chains.
Trade: Make the Case Local
Reaching the $100 billion trade goal will take more than summit statements. The most persuasive argument on Capitol Hill is a local one. When a Turkish company opens a warehouse in New Jersey, hires workers in Ohio or partners with a manufacturer in Texas, every member of Congress understands that story. Businesses should invite lawmakers to their facilities and show how trade with Türkiye supports jobs in their districts. Trade is also one of the few areas where both parties can find common ground.

The Role of Turkish Americans
Members of Congress listen most closely to their own constituents, and Turkish Americans live and work in districts across the country. During the pandemic, I saw how much trust can be built through shared work. Turkish American volunteers delivered protective equipment and food alongside Democrats and Republicans alike. Those relationships were built not on party lines, but on showing up for the community.
Turkish Americans should meet their newly elected representatives, visit district offices and stay engaged with the Congressional Caucus on U.S.-Turkey Relations and Turkish Americans. The goal is not to choose sides, but to make sure every member of Congress knows our community and understands why the partnership matters. Elections change the balance of power in Washington. They do not change the strategic importance of the U.S.-Türkiye relationship. With patience and steady engagement, the next two years can still be a period of progress.
