Westminster Residents Call for Leadership Change Amid High Electric Rates

Residents demand resignations as secrecy and high electric rates strain Westminster families
WESTMINSTER, S.C. - Rezul -- Westminster, SC — Residents are demanding the resignation of Mayor Brian Ramey and City Administrator Kevin Bronson, citing a lack of accountability and transparency in city leadership. Community members argue that Westminster has been pushed aside, burdened with some of the highest electric rates in the region while its leaders remain silent or detached.
Westminster's electric rates average 16.5 cents per kilowatt hour, far above the South Carolina average of 13.5 cents and 5–6 cents higher than neighboring towns. One resident reported asking the town clerk for the current rate, only to be told the clerk did not know. Utility bills themselves do not list the rate, leaving families in the dark about what they are paying.
Much of the burden stems from Westminster's long‑term contract with the Piedmont Municipal Power Agency (PMPA), which residents say is outdated and financially harmful. Bronson, who earns more than $140,000 annually and resides outside Westminster, plays a central role in managing these contracts. Because he lives elsewhere, he avoids the same high rates that Westminster families must pay.
