"May we find strength in one another and continue the work of healing our community and remember that our City's motto is 'LOVE LIFE.'" The Honorable Pamela Price

My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of Latetia Bobo, a beloved teacher and artist, and Markise Martin, a young father, whose lives were tragically taken in the mass shooting at EZ's Lounge in downtown Oakland. I also extend my condolences to the persons who were shot during this incident and to our community, especially the young people whose lives have been shaken by this act of violence.

Every life lost to and every person injured by gun violence is a profound tragedy. The tragedy at EZ's Lounge is part of a broader crisis. Across the United States, dozens of mass shootings occur every year, leaving scores of people killed and injured. Unfortunately, this is not the first mass shooting in Oakland. I recall the trauma of the Oikos University shooting in 2012, the tragic attack on the students and staff at King Estates in 2022, and the Juneteenth Festival shooting in 2024.

To minimize the trauma to the victims in this terrible incident, it must be a priority for the victim witness advocates in the Alameda County District Attorney's office to move quickly to identify and contact the injured parties and the witnesses. In normal circumstances, victim services depend on the preliminary police report to identify victims and witnesses. Studies have shown if victims receive counseling services within 30 days of the trauma, PTSD is reduced by 60%

I call upon the Mayor's office, the police department and the District Attorney's office to work quickly to identify everyone on the scene that night who has been traumatized by this tragedy. It is imperative that these agencies cast a wide net to serve the young people of this community.

Prior to becoming the DA, I represented victims of and witnesses to crime who never received services because they were not identified by the police agencies. In 2024 when I was the DA, my team took the initiative to identify the victims of the Juneteenth Festival as quickly as possible. In the aftermath of that tragedy, we also walked the business district in the Lakeside area to address the concerns of business owners because of our concern for the community.

These events remind us that whether one life is taken or many lives are lost at once, the underlying causes of gun violence must be addressed—unresolved conflicts, much too easy access to guns, and cycles of trauma that go untreated.

To everyone who has experienced gun violence—whether you lost a loved one, survived an attack, or live with the trauma of violence in your family or neighborhood—please know that you are not alone. Our community stands with you, and your pain matters. My prayers remain with all who are grieving. May we find strength in one another and continue the work of healing our community and remember that our City's motto is "LOVE LIFE."
