New Book Reveals Why Clinical Skills Alone Aren't Enough in Modern Dentistry

Communication—not clinical ability—is the missing link in establishing patient trust, increasing case acceptance, and improving practice performance.

SANFORD, Fla. - Rezul -- Dentists spend years mastering clinical procedures, yet most receive little formal training in how to communicate with patients or lead a team. According to a new book, The Dental Communication Advantage: Proven Scripts and Strategies to Train Your Team and Grown Your Practice, this gap is one of the most overlooked drivers of patient hesitation, staff turnover, and lost revenue in dental practices today.

In The Dental Communication Advantage, dental practice management expert David Schwab, Ph.D., argues that while clinical competence is essential, it is no longer sufficient in today's environment. Patients are more informed, more cost-conscious, and more skeptical than ever—making communication skills a critical factor in whether patients accept treatment, return for care, or trust their provider.

"Many dentists assume that if they just present the facts, patients will move forward with treatment," Dr. Schwab said. "But in reality, patients make decisions based on subjective factors such as trust, as well as how well they understand the benefits of treatment—not just clinical need."

Dr. Schwab noted that the American Dental Association reports that 73% of American adults express fear and anxiety about going to the dentist.  "The result is that many people delay needed treatment.  Dentists and their teams need to be continually aware of patients' expressed and unexpressed concerns," he said. "Dental professionals need to explain to patients that essential treatment will never be more conservative, more cost effective, or less invasive than it is today," Dr. Schwab advises.

The book explains how breakdowns in communication often lead to:
  • Lower case acceptance rates.
  • Increased patient anxiety and mistrust.
  • Higher staff turnover and internal conflict.

To help solve these problems, The Dental Communication Advantage provides practical frameworks and real-world examples to help dentists improve patient conversations, strengthen team communication, and build more efficient, patient-centered practices.  Each chapter concludes with a "Your Turn" section--ready-made team meeting agendas and questions to help dentists and teams apply the skills taught in the book.
