A Landmark Moment for Fine Dining as Chef Charlie Mitchell Takes the Helm of Saga

NEW YORK, Sept. 2, 2025 ~ Kent Hospitality Group has announced an exciting new chapter for Saga, the renowned Michelin two-star restaurant located on the 63rd floor of 70 Pine Street in New York City's Financial District. This month, Chef Charlie Mitchell will take over as the head chef, bringing his fresh and creative perspective to one of the world's most celebrated fine dining destinations.

At just 33 years old, Chef Mitchell is already making waves in the culinary world. He is not only the first Black chef in New York City to earn a Michelin star, but he is also a veteran of Eleven Madison Park. Over the past year, he has been developing an entirely new tasting menu for Saga that combines classical French techniques with personal influences from his grandmother's Southern cooking, his Detroit upbringing, and his love for Japanese seafood. The result is a deeply soulful cuisine executed with meticulous technique.

But Chef Mitchell's impact on Saga goes beyond just the food. The restaurant has undergone a light renovation of its interiors and a complete refresh of its visual identity to reflect both the Financial District of the 1990s and Chef Mitchell's cultural influences. This transformation aims to create a contemporary interpretation of fine dining that stays true to Saga's roots while also embracing new perspectives.

"I am grateful to all the great chefs who have come before me and shaped my craft," said Chef Mitchell. "But I am equally inspired by creative entrepreneurs like Virgil Abloh and Jay-Z, who have stayed true to their roots while mastering their craft and bringing their communities with them. As a kid from Detroit, that is the perspective I bring to Saga."

Chef Mitchell's appointment as head chef holds deep personal meaning for him. After the unexpected passing of his mentor James Kent in 2024, Chef Mitchell accepted the invitation to lead Kent's restaurant and honor his legacy while also forging his own creative path. Kent always had a vision for empowering the next generation of culinary talent and making Saga one of the best restaurants in the world, a mission that Chef Mitchell continues to pursue with unwavering dedication.

In collaboration with renowned fashion designer Sergio Hudson, known for his bold color palettes and modern take on power dressing, Saga's staff uniforms have been updated to reinterpret the confident silhouettes of classical Wall Street through a contemporary lens. Additionally, acclaimed architect firm Modellus Novus has elevated the guest experience by updating the restaurant's interiors.

Maverick Carter, partner at Kent Hospitality Group, expressed his excitement for Chef Mitchell's new role: "I have been following Charlie's career since his days at Clover Hill and have always known he was a one-of-a-kind talent. When given a platform and empowered to fully express their vision, extraordinary things happen."

The new Saga experience opened to the public on September 1st with reservations available through Resy. Chef Daniel Humm, owner of Eleven Madison Park, also shared his praise for Chef Mitchell: "Charlie is one of the most gifted chefs I've had the privilege to work alongside. His cooking has a rare combination of precision, creativity, and soul – which makes him the perfect chef to carry the incredible legacy of Saga forward."

As he leads Saga into its next chapter as a restaurant that is not only defined by its accolades but also by its community, Chef Mitchell continues Kent's ethos of authentic cultural expression executed at the highest level of culinary artistry. "I want Saga to reflect the diverse, global tastes and interests of the next generation of fine diners," said Chef Mitchell. "My approach to cooking blends classical technique with personal and cultural influences, creating an experience that tells a story and connects with people from all backgrounds."
