Free Audiobook Offers Evidence-Informed Support for Hoarding Disorder
Rezul News/10731990
LONDON - Rezul -- Clinical hypnotherapist Ursula James has released a new free audiobook, "Getting to Grips with Hoarding", developed in collaboration with Clouds End CIC, a specialist organisation supporting individuals affected by hoarding behaviours.
Hoarding disorder is increasingly recognised as a complex mental health condition with significant consequences for wellbeing, safety, and relationships. Despite this, engagement with support remains low, often due to stigma, misunderstanding, and the emotional difficulty associated with change.
This audiobook is informed by emerging clinical research, including a 2025 peer-reviewed study published in Clinical Psychologist (Clark et al., 2025), which identifies a key barrier to treatment: individuals with hoarding behaviours often prioritise maintaining control over the help-seeking process.
The study highlights that many individuals disengage from support when it feels imposed or overwhelming, while approaches that preserve autonomy—such as self-directed resources and gradual engagement—are more acceptable and effective.

Reflecting these findings, "Getting to Grips with Hoarding" focuses on emotional readiness before practical change begins. Rather than immediately addressing decluttering, it prioritises calm, safety, and a sense of control.
The audiobook includes two guided hypnosis sessions designed to reduce overwhelm, enhance emotional regulation, and support individuals in approaching change at their own pace.
"With hoarding, the challenge is not simply the environment—it is the emotional relationship to possessions," said Ursula James. "This audiobook helps individuals feel calmer, safer, and more able to begin change."
Ursula James brings over 30 years of clinical experience and is Patron of Anxiety UK. She has taught clinical hypnosis in UK medical schools, including Oxford and Cambridge.
Clouds End CIC contributes specialist expertise in hoarding behaviour, focusing on reducing stigma and improving outcomes through education, advocacy, and practical support.
