Clark Atlanta University Announces Collaboration with IBM to cultivate AI skills among students and aspiring developers

ATLANTA, July 3, 2025 ~ Clark Atlanta University has announced a new collaboration with IBM SkillsBuild to address the growing need for skilled developers in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). This partnership aims to not only cultivate talent among future developers but also drive economic growth.
According to the latest Future of Jobs report from the World Economic Forum, the skills gap remains a significant barrier to business transformation. By 2030, it is estimated that 39% of current skills may become outdated. In addition, recent research from IBM and Morning Consult reveals that 76% of developers do not consider themselves experts in generative AI. This highlights how the growth of generative AI has exacerbated the existing skills gap across various roles.
In response to this pressing issue, Clark Atlanta University has joined forces with IBM as part of a new strategy to equip university students and aspiring developers with essential AI competencies. "As we embark on this transformative partnership with IBM, we recognize the critical importance of closing the digital divide and fostering a technological landscape that embraces excellence," says Dr. Charlene D. Gilbert, Provost and Senior Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Clark Atlanta University.

The collaboration will provide students with practical real-world learning opportunities through access to watsonx, IBM's portfolio of generative AI products, and Granite, their family of open-source large language models. Additionally, faculty training will be a key element of this partnership as IBM offers professors at Clark Atlanta University AI training and resources to help them cultivate their students' abilities.
This additional guidance and support from IBM experts, along with new coursework on generative AI and access to watsonx and Granite, will give professors more options to incorporate advanced AI learning into their curriculum.
Students at Clark Atlanta University will also have hands-on experiences through interactive labs offered by IBM. These labs will allow students to dive deeper into topics such as code generation and data classification using LLMs like IBM Granite. They will also have opportunities to earn digital credentials recognized by future employers.
Innovation challenges, such as hackathons, will also be available for students to participate in and use IBM's Granite to develop solutions. Additionally, selected students will have access to watsonx to work on real-world projects with the guidance of IBM experts and their professors.

Furthermore, IBM SkillsBuild will offer free generative AI courses for beginners, helping students across disciplines build a foundation of AI understanding. These courses, which are about one hour each, cover topics such as text-to-speech exploration, building chatbots, and an introduction to open-source LLMs.
Justina Nixon-Saintil, IBM VP and Chief Impact Officer, emphasizes the importance of skilled talent in the rapidly evolving field of AI. "The pace of AI innovation continues to challenge and inspire businesses across industries," she says. "The future of AI will be shaped by students, educators, and professionals who not only have the skills to use generative AI but also to manage AI agents or even build them."
This collaboration between Clark Atlanta University and IBM SkillsBuild is a significant step towards bridging the skills gap in the field of AI. It not only prepares students for future opportunities but also ensures that the development of artificial intelligence reflects a diverse range of perspectives from the communities it serves. By equipping students with essential AI competencies, this partnership promotes economic viability and sustainable growth in the digital age.
