Carolina Arbors' Residents Participate in Building Habitat for Humanity Homes in Durham
Rezul News/10476044
DURHAM, N.C. - Rezul -- As the nation's leading builder of active adult communities for those 55 and older, Del Webb is pleased to announce that residents of Carolina Arbors have been admirable proponents and active volunteers in Habitat for Humanity home building projects in the Durham area.
"The residents of Carolina Arbors completed a home in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity in late 2018, and they currently have a 2020 Habitat home underway," said David Carrier, president of PulteGroup's Raleigh division. "It's an inspiration to see the generosity and commitment to service of these residents at work in the greater Durham community."
Carolina Arbors' resident John Orth was active in Habitat for Humanity home building projects for many years in Wisconsin prior to his move to Durham. In organizing a group of volunteers for the Durham Habitat Chapter, affectionately known as the "Carolina Arbors' Geezers" in a nod to Habitat's self-titled "Geezer Groups" across the country, Orth learned that many of the members of his group were also members of the Carolina Arbors' Veteran's Club. Teamwork quickly resulted, with fundraising and the organization of construction groups soon underway for a Habitat home in Durham for a former Navy nurse.
"During our fundraising campaign, Pulte gave us a pledge for $7,500," said Orth. "When the Pulte check arrived, it was actually for $40,000 as a result of many generous donations. Because we had already raised a substantial amount of money, we finished our first Habitat home with more than $30,000 to spare. Of course, the decision on what to do with the additional money was to begin work on another fundraising campaign to build a second Habitat home."

A groundbreaking ceremony for the second Habitat home by Carolina Arbors' volunteers, this one for an Army veteran, was held in early March of 2020. Due to COVID-19, physical construction was temporarily paused; once North Carolina moves into Phase III of the state's re-opening plan, the Carolina Arbors' team will be back in action.
"I have been involved in both efforts by Carolina Arbors to build a Habitat home for a veteran and I can tell you it was very fulfilling and exciting," said Carolina Arbors' resident Bob Kennedy. "When we started, the goal of $70,000 was daunting and, frankly, I didn't think we would make it. But donations came in, large and small, from businesses such as Pulte as well as many of the Carolina Arbors' clubs. It was a heartwarming experience. When we started the second fundraising effort, even with $30,000 left over from the first, I wondered whether we would make it... But we did. There are not enough words to express how proud I am to be a member of this community. I'm ready to do it again."
Located in Durham off Leesville Road, in close proximity to the intersection of Highway 70 and I-540, PulteGroup's Del Webb began construction on Carolina Arbors' 1,292 homes in 2013. Sales at the community were complete in early 2020, with homeowners consisting of active adults aged 55 and older.
