Carew Papritz's Washington Blade Op-Ed on Alex Pretti and Renee Good Gains New Relevance as Pretti Family Demands Answers

New developments in the Alex Pretti case renew attention on Papritz's commentary asking readers to remember the human lives behind the headlines
GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. - Rezul -- Award-winning author, literacy advocate, and cultural commentator Carew Papritz is revisiting his Washington Blade op-ed on Alex Pretti and Renee Good following new public remarks from Pretti's parents, who are calling for answers nine months after their son's death.
Michael and Susan Pretti held their first news conference since their son was killed on October 27, saying they have received no substantive information from the federal government about the investigation and calling for greater transparency and accountability.
Their remarks bring fresh relevance to Papritz's February 20 Washington Blade op-ed, "How do we honor Renee Good, Alex Pretti?"

The renewed attention comes just weeks after Renee Good's family and partner filed two federal civil lawsuits related to her January death in Minneapolis.
While the recent media attention and legal developments focus on accountability and the circumstances surrounding Pretti's and Good's deaths, Papritz's essay took a different approach. Rather than reducing Renee Good and Alex Pretti to political symbols or viral footage, he asked readers to remember the full lives that existed before those final images.
"The sum of their lives declared in less than 10 seconds of cellphone video," Papritz wrote. "They haven't just lost their lives. They've lost all of their lives."
The Washington Blade piece reflects a theme that runs through much of Papritz's work: the danger of losing sight of human dignity when public debate becomes louder than the people at its center. He wrote about Good as a poet, community member, and loved one, and about Pretti as a person whose life extended far beyond the circumstances of his death.

Papritz closes the essay with an original poem mourning the ordinary moments that violence takes away: dinners, books, conversations, families, and futures that will never unfold.
Papritz's work has also appeared in U.S. News & World Report, the Chicago Tribune, the Kansas City Star, and the Los Angeles Tribune, which recently profiled how The Legacy Letters grew into a wider mission of advocacy and action.
