Birth to Five Helpline: Crucial Resource Amid National Call for Parental Mental Health Support

SWHD's Free Service Aligns with HHS Data Showing Escalating Parental Stress Crisis
PHOENIX - Rezul -- Southwest Human Development, Arizona's largest nonprofit dedicated to early childhood development, will celebrate the fifth annual "Birth to Five Helpline Awareness Week," September 29 through October 3, 2025. This event is held annually because new babies are born to first-time parents every year, who can benefit from this unique and helpful resource. To our knowledge, Arizona is the only state with a helpline dedicated to helping parents with babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, staffed by early childhood professionals.
This year's observance comes as recent 2025 data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reveals an escalating crisis: 48% of parents now report that most days their stress is completely overwhelming, compared to just 26% among other adults - highlighting an urgent and growing need to support parents, caregivers, and families better.
The HHS data shines a light on the intensifying stress parents endure and its impact on their mental health -- which can directly affect the well-being of their children. The gap between parental stress levels and those of other adults has widened significantly, with parents now nearly twice as likely to report overwhelming daily stress.

"Parenting comes with a unique set of stressors, from financial concerns to navigating technology and social media," said Jake Adams, Chief Development Officer at Southwest Human Development. "These are challenges that parents didn't necessarily face a generation ago, but they are deeply felt today. The Birth to Five Helpline is here to ensure that no parent must face these questions and concerns alone."
The Birth to Five Helpline (877-705-KIDS), supported by First Things First and other community partners, is a free resource available to Arizona families. Whether it's a question about feeding, sleep, developmental milestones, or challenging behaviors, parents can call, text, or email a specialist to receive personalized support from early childhood experts.
"Parents and caregivers of young children are the unsung heroes of our community," said Adams. "At Southwest Human Development, we see firsthand how a little bit of support from an experienced expert can positively impact the mental health of parents and the well-being of their children. The latest HHS data is a powerful call to action, and we are proud to offer critical support through the Birth to Five Helpline to help answer questions and come up with a path forward with parents, helping them to feel more confident and competent."
