After Regaining Mobility, Los Angeles Woman Faces New Battle: Staying Housed During Recovery
Rezul News/10725917
A story of recovery, resilience, and the ongoing cost of healing.
LOS ANGELES - Rezul -- Los Angeles, CA — After months of being confined to a wheelchair due to severe nerve damage, Jonine Scott has made remarkable progress in her recovery and is now walking again. But while her physical healing continues, the financial impact of her illness remains overwhelming.
Jonine's nerve damage affected her arms, legs, and ability to live independently, forcing her to rely on outside help and adaptive support for daily activities. During this time, her income stopped, medical costs increased, and basic living expenses began to pile up. Now living in supportive housing and surviving on a fixed income, she is struggling to keep up with rent, groceries, transportation, and ongoing recovery-related needs.
"Learning to walk again was only part of the battle," said Scott. "Recovery doesn't stop when you regain mobility — it continues every day, and so do the expenses that come with it."
To help stabilize her situation during this critical phase, Jonine has launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover essential needs while she completes recovery and works toward independence. Funds raised will go toward housing stability, food, medical-related costs, and transportation to appointments.

In addition to fundraising, Jonine is sharing her story publicly to bring awareness to the hidden financial toll of medical recovery, particularly for seniors and individuals living on fixed incomes. Through her writing on Medium and community outreach, she hopes to remind others that healing is not just physical — it's also financial and emotional.
"No one should have to choose between healing and having a place to live," Scott said. "Asking for help is hard, but sometimes it's the only way forward."
