Rezul News/10405233
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Jan. 7, 2019 - Rezul -- Walter Art Gallery is pleased to present Stratums, the joint exhibition of local artists Jeff Davis and Tom Ortega, exploring surfaces and underpinnings with a masterful use of color and line. Davis and Ortega create images that invite viewers into new spaces and unknown times by utilizing layers and shades in new ways to please the eye and engage the imagination.

Jeff Davis creates abstract work using algorithmic processes, exploring geometric structure and color arrangement through computation and iteration. Davis writes custom software in the programming language, PROCESSING that randomly determines compositional elements related to size, quantity, color, placement, and grid density within specified parameters. Davis received his BA in Mathematics and Studio Art from Lawrence University, and his MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has work exhibited at venues throughout the U.S. including Arizona State University, Lawrence University, the University of Minnesota, the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, the Center for Contemporary Art in Sacramento, and the Tucson Museum of Art. He has also authored two textbooks, Foundations of Design and Foundations of Color.

Tom Ortega creates minimalist abstract paintings and sculptures. Each piece informs the next with his process reflecting a passage of time, layering of ghosted images and rubbings taken from one painting and added to another. The artist sands the wood surfaces, pulls them apart and puts them back again allowing each piece to live a life before it is complete. The artist sees every day in the studio as an opportunity to learn something, a chance to experiment and play. Ortega received his BA in Drawing/Painting from North Texas University and a BA in Communications from Texas Tech University. His work is included in many private, public and corporate collections. Most recently he was added to the Polsinelli collection and was featured in the Microdwell exhibition at the historic Shemer Art Center.  His work is currently represented by Mary Tomas Gallery in Dallas Texas. Recently Ortega's work was featured in The Family Fang, the new Nicole Kidman movie, recently filmed in New York.

Walter Art Gallery will host an artist reception for Jeff Davis and Tom Ortega on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 6:30-9:30pm with an opportunity to meet the artists. Light hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided. The Closing Reception will take place on Friday February 15, 2019 from 6:30-9:30pm.
