One Woman's Brave Road to Recovery is a Tribute to Cancer Pioneers

NEW YORK - Feb. 10, 2019 - Rezul -- A touching, true-life story by veteran film producer, Germaine McCormack-Kos, Walk on the Wild Side, has been released on Amazon and iTunes. This amazing Coup De Coeur Award-winning film from the Views of the World Festival in Montreal is gripping from the first frame. Surviving Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer, Germaine was determined to pay tribute to the rarely lauded pioneers of cancer cures who she located after an exhaustive worldwide search and then expertly filmed. This global story is a true-life saga of Germaine's courageous journey and a unique take on the medical pioneers' incredible stories. She had the unconditional support of her children, Nico and Kristian, family, and friends---giving them the moniker of her "A-Team"--- and a cadre of dedicated doctors and nurses. All selflessly helping her through years of treatment, they contributed to Germaine's will to survive, thus giving her the strength to make her film, Walk on the Wild Side. In April 2007, Germaine received a dreaded diagnosis that could have ended her life. Extraordinarily, under the care of Dr. Gérard Lesbats along with his remarkable team of dedicated professionals at the Clinique du Parc Imperial in Nice, France, she has lived to tell the tale. One of the first surviving patients of a new combination chemotherapy, the Irish-born, naturally inquisitive Germaine, whose father was a surgeon, wanted to find out more about the history of cancer therapy. Using her skills honed from years as a producer, she began in-depth research in her second year of treatment. Remembering a chance meeting with one of the four major pioneers of modern oncology,  Dr. Georges Mathé, who had shared with her his recently published child art therapy book, a collection of drawings and paintings by the young patients he treated from all over the world. Like everything he did, the book was years ahead of its time. Certain there was more to the story of the treatments he pioneered, Germaine decided to follow his footsteps and take a walk on the wild side.

Fast forward and only just in remission, Germaine learned that Dr. Mathé was gravely ill. Determined to honor  Dr. Mathé's legacy and meet the pioneers with whom he first collaborated, Germaine went on a tireless search. Intrepidly traveling from Nice to Paris then New York, Houston to Chicago, Brussels to Cambridge, MA, and back to again to Nice, finding camera crews along the way, she managed to track down and interview the great doctors and those who have followed. She filmed these self-effacing, highly collaborative creative geniuses, among the first doctors ever to use the word 'cure' for cancer: Emil Frei, MD, FASCO, Emil J. Freireich, MD, FASCO, James F. Holland, MD, FASCO.

Creating a historical document and personal narrative drawn from uncountable hours of raw film footage, Germaine shows us the human side of oncology...a side so often overlooked. Dramatically interwoven with her own brave, personal journey, the resulting intimate documentary is a deeply engaging and heartfelt tribute. It is also a timely portrait of those pioneers of cancer treatment, brave enough to take a walk on the wild side of medical innovation, and those still working in the field today. Saving millions of lives, they gave hope, paving the way for all present and future treatments.  Still working at the age of 92, Dr. Emil J. Freireich is sadly the only survivor of the original four pioneers featured in the documentary.

With a stirring music score by the multi-award-winning English composer, George Fenton (Lord Richard Attenborough's Gandhi, Cry Freedom, Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Dangerous Liaisons, The Fisher King) and editing by the legendary Mark Fletcher (Nature, America Wild, Wings Over the Serengeti, Frozen Planet, America's Musical Journey ), the 58-minute film is being shared the world over as a story of hope and triumph. Walk on the Wild Side is a film that shines a light on the innovative pioneers dedicated to finding a cure for everyone and Germaine McCormack-Kos' brave journey on the long road to recovery, wellness, and a bright future.
