40 day Lent campaign raises money to alleviate suffering of vulnerable, forgotten people in the Americas

NEW YORK - Feb. 15, 2018 - Rezul -- This Lenten season, what will you choose to be your sacrifice? During the 40 days of Lent, Malteser International Americas, the humanitarian arm of the Order of Malta, is asking the faithful community to join their fourth annual Lent campaign to help raise $20,000 to aid the most vulnerable in the Americas.

For the seven Fridays leading up to Easter (beginning February 16), Malteser International Americas is asking all people practicing Lent to make just one sacrifice and instead donate the money saved to their #MakeLentCount fund drive: http://bit.ly/2BVQjy4.

The organization is encouraging people to sacrifice a non-essential item from their lives at any time and any day, for as long as they want for the duration. Simple actions make a profound impact and go a long way.

"Sacrificing a daily coffee purchase, bypassing an after work outing, giving up our favorite beverage, or skipping that extra fast food lunch stop makes relatively no impact in our daily lives," said Ravi Tripptrap, Executive Director, Malteser International Americas.

"But that little amount of money saved can make a lifetime of difference to children and families in vulnerable, impoverished, forgotten communities in Mexico, Colombia, Haiti, Peru, and the United States, who depend on our humanitarian relief," continued Tripptrap.

This year, funds donated from each sacrifice will go towards: 1) families in Puerto Rico who are still without electricity, food, water and jobs; 2) displaced, struggling, malnourished farmers in Colombia; 3) the reforestation of protective mangrove areas in Haiti; and 4) helping those who are still struggling in the United States following Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

The campaign will again feature the social media hashtag #MakeLentCount to connect supporters and encourage them to share what they are sacrificing and donating so that others may have the help they need.

Malteser International Americas is asking all who sacrifice and want to make a donation instead to please visit the #MakeLentCount donation page: http://bit.ly/2BVQjy4.
