City Council Honors National Preservation Month and 50 Years of the Boston Landmarks Commission

~ Boston City Council Recognizes the Importance of Historic Preservation in Shaping the City's Identity

In a unanimous decision, the Boston City Council passed a resolution recognizing the central role that historic preservation plays in shaping Boston's identity and protecting its defining places. Introduced by City Councilor Sharon Durkan and co-sponsored by Councilors Ruthzee Louijeune and Enrique Pepén, the resolution also received endorsements from Council President Liz Breadon and Councilors Culpepper, Mejia, Weber, Flynn, Fitzgerald, Worrell, Murphy, and Santana.

The resolution acknowledges the significant impact that the Boston Landmarks Commission has had in preserving the city's buildings, streetscapes, districts, landscapes, and cultural sites for over 50 years. These efforts have helped make Boston recognizable around the world with its iconic civic landmarks and historic neighborhoods. The Commission has played a crucial role in guiding change while ensuring that Boston's historic character remains one of its greatest strengths.

The City Council also highlighted the broader work of the Office of Historic Preservation, which includes programs such as the City Archaeology Program and the Boston Commemoration Commission. These initiatives aim to uncover, document, interpret, and share Boston's layered history to deepen public understanding of the people, events, and communities that have shaped the city over four centuries. From archaeological discoveries to future commemorative work leading toward Boston400 as part of Boston250 initiatives, these programs continue to engage the public with Boston's rich history.
