Life Imitates Art as Trump Tops Polls
Rezul News/10276767
Is hacking a more likely explanation for the Donald's success than real voter interest? Current events mirror plotline of just-released cybersecurity thriller.
Rezul - Aug. 11, 2015 - Yes, life can imitate art. Or so it seems, with Donald Trump maintaining his place at the top of the presidential polls. Just like the equally implausible conservative candidates do in The Lafayette Campaign, a Tale of Deception and Elections, the sequel to Andrew Updegrove's much acclaimed debut thriller, The Alexandria Project. In the fictional campaign, the results lead a secret government agency to call on Frank Adversego, a brilliant but asocial, middle-aged cybersecurity expert to find out who is hacking the polls before the Black Hats steal the election as well.

Today, anything can – and has – been hacked, from banks to the White House. Every system is vulnerable, including the hundreds of thousands of poorly supervised voting machines spread across America. Could they be hacked? Of course. But would they? Many historians believe that Nixon's hair's breadth loss to Kennedy 55 years ago was the result of voter fraud. It would be far easier to steal an election today electronically. And no one might ever know it happened.
The Lafayette Campaign provides a satirical take on American politics and our infatuation with technology that will make readers pause and wonder: could this really happen? "Andrew Updegrove brings a rare combination of drama, satire and technical accuracy to his writing," says Admiral James G. Stavridis, retired Commander, U.S. European Command and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and current Dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. "The result is a book you can't put down that tells you things you might wish you didn't know."
